Incubators and Commercialization Centers

Advanced technology incubators and the BioGenerator, a technology transfer and commercialization center, in the St. Louis region bring increasing levels of support and collaborative opportunities for plant and medical sciences start-ups.

  • The BioGenerator is a virtual commercialization and technology transfer center designed to harness the world-class research being done within the St. Louis region and to channel it into a steady flow of start-up companies. The BioGenerator provides proof-of-concept funding and support to accelerate commercialization and create fundable companies. The Danforth Foundation, the Monsanto Fund, the McDonnell Family Foundation and Bunge North America provide funding.
  • Center for Emerging Technologies (CET) is private, not-for-profit incubator/accelerator developing start-up companies in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, advanced materials, and electronics. The 92,000-square-foot facility includes specialized research and development space. CET tenants have attracted over $804 million in venture funds, angels investors, grants, and contracts since 1998. The CET is developing a third building (60,000 square feet) that will include leasable wet lab space from companies commercializing new medical advancements.
  • Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprise is a nonprofit plant and life sciences incubator that relocated to the Bio-Research & Development Growth (BRDG) Park on the campus of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in late summer 2009. The new 15,000-square-foot space in Building I on the campus provides wet-lab and office space for early stage companies focused on plant science technologies. Other services include assistance with business planning, developing advisory boards, advice in contract negotiation, and connections to service providers that understand entrepreneurs’ needs. Established in 2000, the Nidus Center projected a $1.5 billion impact on the regional economy over its first 15 years.
  • The River’s Edge Enterprise Center is the only small business incubator in southwestern Illinois. Located in Granite City, this incubator provides office space for numerous small companies and startup businesses, in addition to business counseling services, networking opportunities, conference rooms, and other office amenities. The Enterprise Center is operated by the Tri-City Regional Port District and the Southwestern Illinois Entrepreneurship Center, and it currently houses 13 office and three industrial startup companies on the property.
