University of Missouri Columbia

The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 in Columbia as the first U.S. public university west of the Mississippi River. Today with more than 29,000 students, 12,000 full-time employees and 244,000 alumni worldwide, Missouri's flagship university is a global enterprise and an economic powerhouse.

Although many states fund both a research university and a land-grant university, Missouri combines those roles on MU's 1,448-acre campus. MU offers more than 270 degree programs and is one of only six public universities nationwide with medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, agriculture and law all on one campus. The state's only public member of the Association of American Universities, MU attracts 72 percent of the federal research dollars flowing to Missouri’s public universities.

Citizens across the state connect with Mizzou by participating in Extension programs in every county, visiting MU Health Care specialists, competing in state competitions in MU facilities and by cheering on the Missouri Tigers at athletic events. Currently more than 43,000 Mizzou alumni live and play a
vital role in the St. Louis region.
