Best Hospital Overall

  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University ranked No. 9 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 annual list of “America’s Best Hospitals” up from No. 12 last year. In addition, the hospital ranked highly in 12 specialties areas, which include kidney disorders, neurology & neurosurgery, respiratory disorders, ear, nose & throat and more.
  • Saint Louis University Hospital ranked No. 29 in the specialty area of geriatric care by U.S. News & World Report in its 2009 “America’s Best Hospitals” list.
  • St. Luke's Hospital received the 2009 "America's 50 Best Hospitals"award by HealthGrades for outstanding clinical performance over the course of a seven-year period. St. Luke's was ranked for the third consecutive year and remains the only hospital in Missouri to be named on this list.
  • Missouri Baptist Medical Center was named one of Thomson Reuters' "Top 100 Hospitals" in the Large Community Hospitals category in Thomson Reuters annual study, released April 2009. Thomson Reuters examines clinical process and outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance and operational efficiency when determining its list.
  • In 2009, St. Louis Children’s Hospital was named as the 5th "Best Pediatric Hospital" in the nation by Parents magazine. Several specialties were rated in the top ten, including newborn medicine (No. 3), orthopedics (No. 3), pulmonary medicine (No. 4), emergency medicine (No. 4), and cardiac services (No. 6). St. Louis Children's Hospital also ranked on U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Children's Hospitals" 2009 top 10 honor roll list with top rated specialties in neonatal care, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, respiratory disorders, urology, and more.
  • SSM St. Mary's Health Center ranked among the top 50 on U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" list in 2007 for a specialty in Neurology & Neurosurgery. St. Mary's Health Center was also recognized as a top teaching hospital on the Thompson 100 Top Hospitals list for 2006.
  • St. Luke’s Hospital has been named a Top 100 hospital five times by Solucient, an information provider to the health care industry. St. Luke’s consistent excellence led to its being named one of 77 benchmark hospitals in the nation.

Highest Quality

  • St. John's Mercy Medical Center earned the Primaris Hospital Quality Award for 2006. Each year Primaris recognizes one Missouri hospital for superior performance on measurable clinical standards, quality transparency and continuous improvement.
  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital was named as a 2006/07 Consumer Choice Award winner for having the highest quality and image out of 186 U.S. hospitals in its respective Metropolitan Statistical Area.
  • In 2002, St. Louis-based SSM Healthcare, which operates one of the largest Catholic health care systems in the country, became the first health care organization in the country to be named a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winner.
  • In 2004, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital became the first pediatric hospital to receive the Missouri Quality Award, which was established in 1992. The Excellence in Missouri Foundation uses Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria to recognize excellence in areas such as customer service and satisfaction, leadership, and organizational performance.

  • Both Illinois and Missouri ranked within the top 5 among states in BioEnterprise's Midwest region for 2006 health-care startup investment. Illinois ranked No. 1 with combined investments of $101.6 million in the first half of 2006. Missouri ranked No. 4 with $37.2 million in the first half of 2006.
  • During the last seven years, St. Louis has enjoyed a higher venture capital funding per life science worker than most competing life-sciences regions, according to the Council on Competitiveness.

Special Designation

  • Four St. Louis area hospitals were awarded Health Grades Inc.'s Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence Award for 2010. The hospitals included Missouri Baptist Medical Center (St. Louis County), SSM Saint Joseph Health Center(St. Charles and Wentzville), SSM St. Mary's Health Center (Richmond Heights), and St. Luke's Hospital (Chesterfield). All scored in the top 5 percent for risk-adjusted death and complication rates after Health Grades evaluated 40 million patient records. Missouri Baptist Medical Center ranked No. 1 in the state for overall cardiac services, receiving the Cardiac Care Excellence Award and Coronary Intervention Excellence Award for 2010.
  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital was named among the 100 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular services on the 2006 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study in Modern Healthcare magazine. It was one of 30 U.S. hospitals recognized as a teaching hospital with a cardiovascular residency program.
  • Missouri Baptist Medical Center and the Center for Cancer Care and Research is one of just 62 community programs nationwide to be granted Community Clinical Oncology Program designation by the National Cancer Institute.
