There is always a lot going on in Greater St. Louis.
Greater St. Louis has hundreds of parks ranging from urban, neighborhood parks to large suburban recreation areas. The area is home to the nationally acclaimed Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country at 1,300 acres. Forest Park features many of the city's premier attractions, including the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, the Municipal Opera, and much more. St. Louis is also known for Tower Grove Park, 289 acres donated to the city in 1868 by Henry Shaw, founder of the adjacent Missouri Botanical Garden. The 79 acre garden, founded in 1859, is an international center for botanical research with extensive public gardens and research facilities.
The St. Louis area also has more than 100 public and private golf courses and is home to some of the best trails for cycling, running, and walking. A 600 mile network of hiking and bicycle trails and greenways that follows the area’s great rivers, “The River Ring” is currently being developed by the Great Rivers Greenway District. More than 150 miles of trails and bicycle routes have been completed, including over 80 miles of on-street bicycle routes in conjunction with Bike St. Louis.
Six Flags St. Louis in Eureka, MO and Raging Rivers WaterPark in Grafton, IL are favorite local destinations for families and children. Just a few hours’ drive away is the 55,000-acre Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri’s largest body of water. Nearby, too, are many beautiful rivers and streams ideal for canoeing. They include the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, established by Congress in 1964 as the nation’s first scenic waterway. Innumerable destinations for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking - even spelunking and skydiving - encircle the area. In short, the St. Louis area is the perfect location for lovers of the outdoors.
And with four distinct seasons, there’s always a new set of activities to enjoy every few months, making Greater St. Louis a truly varied and always exciting place to live.
